Our Story

How it all started...

The Church began out of the leadership of several families who were then members of the Oxnard Church of the Nazarene.  In 1964 a group of about 40 Nazarenes, living in or near Camarillo and belonging to the Oxnard Church of the Nazarene, were organized as the Camarillo Church of the Nazarene under the leadership of then District Superintendent, Shelbourne Brown.  After meeting for several months in homes, the church  rented a Masonic Lodge on Anacapa Drive in Camarillo, CA. We met there for 2 years.  Rev. Kenneth Jenkins became the first pastor and served from 1964-1966.  Dr. William Eckel became pastor in 1966 and served until 1968. During this time the church purchased this present location at 2280 Antonio Avenue, Camarillo, CA.  From 1969-1976 Rev. Gene Van Note was pastor.  Dr. Forrest Stone followed him and was pastor from 1976-1986.  For 18 months Rev. Jerry May was pastor from 1987-1989.  Our present pastor, Bob Hislar, has served the last 25+ years from 1989 to the present. Five years ago we began an Hispanic ministry under the leadership of Pastor Alan Arevalo, Jr. with Pastor Hislar as Senior Pastor.  We now have a membership as One Church with Two Language Congregations of 225 and worship attendance of 177 and Sunday school attendance of 183 (as reported at the last District Assembly).
